In 2014, when these tracks were struggling to be born, neither Luke or myself were at all certain that we were actually Good™️ at Making Music. I had never even heard Luke's compositions before we embarked on a few months of age-appropriate testosteronal house music fixation. Aphex Twin yes, but also a little Skrillex as a treat.
We were essentially strangers when we moved into the same house for our final year at Ohio University. So thankfully, Luke wasn't polite about turning off Justice and introducing me to some bands who perhaps repeat things a bit more thoughtfully (Battles, Minilogue, Menomena, etc). I became obsessed and I think it was sheer luck that our equipment ended up in the same place at the same time being fed into the same computer. It's likely that a stray PBR can fell onto the keyboard and initiated the recording process.
We had no plan. We did have beer, irony, and a gentle, misplaced contempt for the school we could not possibly wait to graduate from so that Real Life could begin.
(Although Lukas disagrees) I kind of regard these as The Most Punk Either Of Us Might Ever Get. It's at times gloriously childlike but also sometimes aggressively unlistenable in a way that makes it's home in your brain, a feeling I've always regarded as a precursor to something I eventually come to love. This may not be the case for y'all necessarily, but Luke's west African guitars, rubbery/grainy synth design and extremely humid mixing still makes this a super one-of-a-kind experience.
There are cool hints of his later, intensely experimental, production. And some early vision of the later Able./Ol Sundog beats that I prefer to call danceable, upon which no one agrees with me, were unhindered and more exploratory in this early phase.
I think it's best to approach this as the violent and messy beginning of both of our forays into Who We Are as recording artists. If you know us well, it's probably not surprising that the most energizing music either of us has made came out of collaboration. Just watch us drink together sometime. - Cody / Ol Sundog
~We're donating all of the proceeds from Bandcamp sales to Lambda Legal, because while the beer may be flowing slightly less and the irony has exited our system, we still possess a more than gentle contempt for those who try to interfere with the lives of people who are just trying to exist. Happy Pride!
